Punjab’s first working women hostel to be constructed in Jalandhar

Jalandhar, June 11 (Aaj ki Aaj)- In a major step to facilitate the working women , Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development of Punjab Dr.  Baljit Kaur on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the first of its kind working women hostel at Gandhi Vanita Ashram in Jalandhar.

The idea behind this hostel was to provide safe and convenient accommodation to around 100 working women at the cost of Rs. 2.17 crore. A crèche facility will also be provided here to take care of children so that working women can perform their duty in a smooth manner .

Terming this decision of Punjab government led by the Chief Minister Mr. Bhagwant Mann a historic initiative, the cabinet minister said that many welfare schemes were being implemented by the department for the empowerment of women in the state.

The Punjab government has planned to establish working women’s hostels in various cities and this scheme has been started today from Jalandhar, she added.

Cabinet Minister further said that this scheme would help in providing a sense of self-respect to the working women besides providing them a safe environment. “Hostel facility may be availed by any working women  provided their husband or immediate family does not reside in the same city or area.  Apart from this, special priority will be given to women belongs to backward sections of the society”, said Dr.  Baljit Kaur.

 The minister said that many women couldn’t work outside their home cities because of lack of safe and convenient accommodation which hinders the economic empowerment of women. “The working women will also play a larger role in the holistic development of the state if they get the facility of such hostels to work efficiently even after getting a job in the cities far from their home”, she added  .

On this occasion ADC (G) Mr. Amit Mahajan , SDM Balbir Raj , Deputy Director Rupinder Kaur , DPOs Amarjit Singh and Manjinder Singh were also present .
